"The seventh edition of Fresh Paint / New Construction features new and recent work from thirty-two up-and-coming students in painting and sculpture from eight Eastern Canadian universities. This annual event sparks a lot of interest in the arts community and it has proven to be a good indicator of future success for the participants. For example, last year five out of the fifteen semi-finalists for the prestigious 2010 RBC Canadian Painting Competition had taken part in past editions of Fresh Paint."

This was my first attempt with this piece, using about 30 elements in various configurations. (Composed of fresh cement and pieces that have fallen off the city.)

This has been an interesting new project. A friend challenged me to work on something using recycled furniture. I had been reading about 60's space-frame architecture at the time, and came up with this idea. The shelves were removed and cut into 3/4 inch strips, sanded down, glued together in a triangular frame, and the legs reattached. Currently working on a second piece.

Models were first created in paper, then balsa wood, shellacked, and silicone molds were made. I have been casting them in concrete in my kitchen!

The Expo In Ruins animation has been postponed for a little while as I don't have the computing power to render it the way I would like at this time. Visits to the site have been interesting though.

Reworked this older project. I needed to emphasize the violence of an exploded dome, and give it a stronger historical context. People were reading it as strictly a formal exercise. Also, I am the process of getting together a proper portfolio and needed some stronger images for that.

Expo in Ruins

Part of an ongoing project I have been working on is called Expo in Ruins. What if the Expo '67 site had been simultaneously destroyed and preserved, similar to the city of Pompeii? I have been creating a digital model of the site, and here are a few working images of what I have so far. For this project I am focusing on the remains of architecture and what they tell us. With over a hundred pavillions to work on, this project will take awhile to complete, and I expect to update them as I find new images. The recreations are based on my own archaeological research... through photographs, video documents, and other images. The Expo site is a virtual ruin, and so it maintains a digital aesthetic in the final work.

The previous idea has ben modified to a regular geodesic sphere, which has then been exploded. Pattern produced using Form-Z, small paper model, and final wooden working model.
Final size for this project approx. 4' x 2 1/5' x 2 1/2'.

Almost completed... this was a class project using AXYZ milling to create a biomorphic object... cutting and stacking layers which are then sanded and glued to form the solid object. First try, so this was more of a technical exercise than a conceptual one. I decided to create a box with a negative interior space. To finish, I will veneer the exterior.

I have a show confirmed for the first two weeks of August at the VAV Gallery at Concordia. Plans are being worked-out and preparations are underway. I will post again when I have more details.

Paint and Thread Structure

First attempt at a cube made from thread. The form was supported by a wire frame and then dipped in paint and allowed to dry a total of seven times. The dried cube was then removed from the frame and able to support itself with the paint acting as both glue to connect the threads at the vertices and to support the structure. Handling it weakened it and overnight it lost rigidity.

By the following morning it began losing rigidity and developed a graceful curve.

By the following day the cube completely lost its' strength and was flattened.
